Safety Inspector – Offshore Human Factors

Permanent | UK-wide role with offshore travel

DATS Recruitment is working with a leading regulatory client to recruit a Specialist Inspector – Offshore Human Factors. This role plays a critical part in improving safety across the UK’s offshore and high-hazard industries, with a strong focus on offshore oil & gas and emerging Net Zero technologies.

The Role

You will act as a Human Factors subject matter expert, regulating offshore installations and influencing industry standards to reduce major accident risks. The work is technically challenging, highly visible and varied, combining offshore inspections with safety case assessment and incident investigation.

Over time, the role will increasingly support Net Zero developments such as carbon capture and storage and floating offshore wind.

Location & Travel

  • Can be based in any of the listed UK locations
  • Aberdeen strongly preferred due to frequent office meetings and offshore mobilisation
  • Offshore trips approx. 6–8 per year, typically 2–3 nights per trip
  • Regular North Sea travel via helicopter or marine access

Locations include: Aberdeen, Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Chelmsford, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Norwich, Nottingham, Plymouth, Sheffield, Wrexham, York (and others).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess offshore safety cases as a Human Factors specialist
  • Inspect offshore and onshore sites as part of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Investigate incidents and complaints, providing expert HF input
  • Produce technical reports and expert evidence for legal proceedings
  • Advise industry and internal stakeholders on offshore human factors risks

About You

This role is suited to an experienced Human Factors professional with offshore or major hazard industry experience.

Essential requirements include:

  • Strong practical experience applying Human Factors in offshore or high-hazard environments
  • Experience influencing engineering design, control rooms, interfaces and safety-critical systems
  • Knowledge of human reliability assessment (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Confidence engaging with offshore personnel through to senior management
  • Ability to produce clear, evidence-based technical arguments

Qualifications & Memberships

  • Relevant degree plus Chartered status (mandatory)
  • Degree in Human Factors / Ergonomics or Engineering / Psychology with relevant postgraduate HF qualification
  • Chartered membership with CIEHF or BPS (HCPC registered)

Package

  • Salary up to £77,000 per annum
  • £5,000 offshore allowance
  • 29% employer pension contribution
  • £15,000 relocation allowance for candidates moving to Aberdeen

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Eligible for security clearance (3 years continuous UK residency)
  • Ability to pass offshore medical and survival training (OEUK / OPITO)
