Process Safety / Chemical Engineering Inspector

Permanent | UK-wide role with regional base

DATS Recruitment is working with a high-profile regulatory client to recruit a Specialist Inspector – Process Safety. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced Process Safety or Chemical Engineer to apply their technical expertise across some of the UK’s highest-hazard industries and help prevent major accidents.

The Role

You’ll regulate and inspect organisations operating in high-risk environments, ensuring major accident risks are properly identified, controlled and reduced. The work is varied, influential and technically challenging, covering sectors such as:

  • Oil, gas and emerging energy technologies
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing and storage
  • Pipelines, explosives and microbiological agents

You may be inspecting a large petrochemical facility one week and supporting an investigation into a serious incident the next.

Location & Travel

  • Office base in Basingstoke, Chelmsford, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield
  • UK site travel required (typically 1–2 trips per month)
  • Regional bias applied where possible

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect high-hazard sites to ensure legal compliance and risk reduction
  • Investigate process safety incidents and identify root causes
  • Produce clear, defensible technical reports
  • Provide specialist advice to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Act as a technical witness where required

About You

This role will suit an experienced Process Safety Engineer or Chemical Engineer who has worked in hazardous industrial environments.

Essential requirements include:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or similar
  • Strong practical experience in process safety within chemical or downstream oil & gas environments
  • Understanding of chemical process plant design and operation
  • Ability to influence, challenge and communicate at all levels
  • Organised, self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously
  • Physically able to walk around industrial process plants

Chartered status (or working towards it) with a relevant professional body is required.

Package

  • Salary up to £65,000 per annum
  • Excellent benefits, including 29% employer pension contribution
  • Flexible working options available (4-day week, 9-day fortnight, term-time working) Some flexibility required during the initial training period

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Eligible for security clearance (minimum 3 years continuous UK residency)
