We’re currently looking for a Construction Manager for a 6 month contract role working in the Industrial Gases Division to be based in Didcot. This is a full-time role. Position is site based, construction managing a number of smaller projects for the site.

The Construction Manager will need to be able to manage and coordinate a number of project managers on the site, as well as doing some permit issuing (without the involvement of process isolation or electrical isolation).

 

Some weeks will be broadly 40 hour weeks, and others will be 60 hour weeks (5 days a week).

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Didcot Facility has been operating for over 30 years. A number of projects are to be executed across the facility, most notably, the life extension project as well an expansion of the packaged gases operations on site. The Construction manager, working with different project engineers will be responsible for the successful planning and execution of all the projects in accordance with all safety, quality and service standards applicable within the Sub-Region Industrial Gases organisation. Where required, the Construction manager will be required to manage smaller discrete projects that have not been assigned a full time project manager.

 

The projects involve a variety of aspects and disciplines, such as civil works, excavations, installation of process equipment and piping, installation of HV and LV electrical systems and equipment, demolition and renovation, erection of new structures, etc.

 

Key interfaces include the ASU operations team, Helium Depot team, plant maintenance team, central technical & EH&S teams, Project engineering teams, external contractors and utility service providers. Accordingly success in the position is dependent on Excellent Interpersonal Skills, Ability to Manage and supervise work teams, Organisational Skills, Operational/Technical Capacity and Strong Leadership skills.

 

Under the direction of the Didcot Plant Manager, the successful candidate will be based on site and will manage all aspects of the variety of projects to an aggressive budget and timeframe.

 

This is a full time role (Monday – Friday); some weekend work may be required depending on the individual project execution plan.

 

ROLE ATTRIBUTES:

The role of Construction Manager is to ensure the efficient and effective execution of the various on-site projects. This role will cover the different phases of the project from the planning to the implementation/commissioning phases. This is a site-based role at the Didcot Facility.

  1. Experienced Construction Manager. Works autonomously, reliably communicating upwards when appropriate.
  2. Preferably with previous Construction experience with the company, and familiarity with the company’s systems, work practices, and organisation.
  3. Strong communicator, written and oral in English language.
  4. Strong planning, coordination and motivating qualities
  5. Strong adherence to budget and programme constraints
  6. Good understanding of multidisciplinary installation
  7. Ability to manage materials to site in a timely manner
  8. Ability to manage multiple contractors in a congested environment.
  9. Delivers on commitments to high level of quality and accuracy, within defined schedule parameters.
  10. Sound knowledge and understanding of Construction and Construction norms in the United Kingdom.
  11. Use of and familiarity with process and safety tools such as P&ID’s and HAZOPs.
  12. Understanding of typical design datasheet/drawings and familiar with General design/construction standards in Mechanical /E&I field which can be related to those generated by the company.
  13. Proven Construction Safety experience and knowledge, covering key area’s such as excavation, Lifting and Cranage, Working at heights and Fall Arrest, Confined Space entry, Hot Work, Oxygen cleaning and inspection, pneumatic pressure testing, etc.
  14. Change Management processes and implementation
  15. Project costing skills for evaluation and managing constructability
  16. Project planning skills
  17. Management or supervisory experience
  18. Construction control systems
  19. An experienced leader and developer of teams, with a proven ability to lead, engage and motivate the team.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is accountable for:

  1. Acting as an Ambassador of the company in all aspects of HSES & Quality:
    1. In conjunction with Contractors’ Management team undertakes a weekly HSSE inspection of allocated areas
    2. Ensure that contractors understand and implement the HSES plan, including permit to work, toolbox talks, visible and relevant safety signs, safety surveillance, installation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, firewatchers, audible emergency warning signal, wind socks, muster areas, and emergency evacuation drills
    3. Agree method statements, risk assessments and job safety analysis. Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with agreed method statements
    4. Ensure all hazardous activities and those with potential risk to material or personnel, have an agreed method statement, and risk assessment prior to commencement of work
    5. Maintain supervisory attendance at all contractor toolbox talks and safety meetings. Encourage contractor safety incentive schemes and promote all processes, Client and contractors team building efforts
    6. Ensure Contractor, Client and Operator personnel understand and fully operate the project permit to work system including tag/lock-out requirements, and that only contractor authorized personnel operate the permit to work system
  2. Accountable for project execution from mobilization to completion phases.
  3. Accountable for coordinating contractors in the on time delivery of work packages to an acceptable quality.
  4. Ensures adequacy of reviews. Ensures issues and bottlenecks are addressed or escalated.
  5. Accountable for ensuring all procured items are ordered and delivered in a timely manner
  6. Accountable for ensuring smooth contractor mobilization. Ensures issues and bottlenecks are addressed or escalated.
  7. Accountable for ensuring robust and detailed plans are in place for all workscope scope.
  8. Taking overall responsibility for the success of construction sites under your control, defined as meeting Project requirements on Safety, Cost, Schedule and Quality.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A sound engineering degree.
  2. A minimum of 10 years experience, split between both Project Construction and Project Management positions, and a demonstrable understanding of Construction as a discipline.
  3. Experience on excavation projects and knowledge of the regulations and safety requirements around excavation activities is desirable.
  4. Project skills including Budgeting, Cost Management, Schedule Management, Admin and Organisation skills, Project Planning
  5. A minimum of 2 years site construction experience in a site leadership role
  6. Familiarity with design drawings and ability to relate these to their application on site
  7. Construction Contracting experience / Contract Management.
  8. Experience of turnkey construction scope including installation of equipment and packages, interconnecting pipework and instrument / electrical cable, infrastructure/utilities scope, tie ins, pipeline networks.
  9. Experience in project definition stage constructability work
  10. Substantial knowledge of the complany’s safety regulations and operating practices is desirable
  11. Broad knowledge of employment, environmental and Health and Safety Legislation
  12. Good management, supervisory, organization & planning skills
  13. Good interpersonal & team working skills (Customers, Regulators bodies, Plant teams, contacts).
  14. Language skills: Competence in English for the company’s inter-departmental communications & global procedures
  15. Working knowledge of relevant legislation, codes and standards with the ability to manage contractors.
  16. Computer literate (MS Office components)
  17. Understanding of typical design datasheet/drawings and familiar with General design/construction standards in Mechanical /E&I field which can be related to those generated by the company.
