Trainee Design & Commissioning Engineer

Location: UK-based with international travel opportunities
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

We are looking for motivated and ambitious individuals to join our team as Trainee Design & Commissioning Engineers. This is an excellent opportunity to develop specialist expertise in electrical power systems while working alongside highly experienced engineers on complex projects both in the UK and internationally.

Depending on your chosen pathway, you will gain experience in either:

Trainee Design Engineer

Develop desk-based engineering and power system design skills, with occasional opportunities for site-based work.

Trainee Commissioning Engineer

Develop practical commissioning and testing skills on complex power system installations worldwide, with some opportunities to contribute to engineering design activities.

Our objective is to help trainees become productive engineers as quickly as possible through structured learning, mentoring, classroom and laboratory training, technical reading, and hands-on project involvement. Highly motivated trainees may begin contributing to live projects within a few months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out engineering and technical tasks as required by the company
  • Produce high-quality technical reports in line with company standards
  • Maintain a professional image and represent the company positively
  • Support project delivery under the guidance of experienced engineers
  • Maintain detailed records of training and experience to support progression towards Chartered Engineer status and professional membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Typical Project Activities

You may be involved in:

  • Commissioning generators and generator control panels
  • Testing and commissioning protection relays, metering, excitation and synchronising systems
  • Commissioning protection and control panels
  • Commissioning high-voltage (HV) equipment
  • Protection relay testing and maintenance activities
  • Supervising or undertaking installation work
  • Protection coordination studies
  • Power system fault level studies
  • Harmonic surveys and analysis
  • Earthing system design calculations

Training & Development

You will receive structured training designed to build a strong understanding of electrical power systems through:

  • On-the-job project experience
  • Technical mentoring
  • Classroom-based learning
  • Laboratory practical sessions
  • Collaboration with experienced technical staff

We actively support career progression and professional development towards Chartered Engineer status.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline
  • Strong interest in electrical power systems
  • Full UK driving licence (or working towards obtaining one)

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of power generation, protection systems or HV equipment
  • Industrial placement, apprenticeship or relevant work experience
  • Membership or interest in joining the IET
