Packing & Logistics Specialist – Oil & Gas

Location: Leatherhead, Surrey
Working Pattern: Predominantly office-based
12- month Contract
£55-60 per hour negotiable - please submit your LTD company rate

We are currently supporting a major engineering project within the oil & gas sector and are looking to engage an experienced Packing & Logistics Specialist to join the team on a contract basis.

This role will be responsible for the governance, review, clarification, inspection and approval of all packing, marking and shipping specifications across a portfolio of oil & gas equipment and materials.

The successful candidate will ensure full compliance with project and corporate requirements, while overseeing the safe, compliant and efficient transportation of goods from supplier through to final delivery location.

Key Responsibilities

Specification Ownership & Governance

  • Act as the focal point for interpretation, implementation and assurance of project packing specifications
  • Ensure suppliers comply with requirements relating to:
    • Incoterms® 2020
    • Packing, marking, preservation and handling procedures
    • Transport, lifting and slinging documentation
    • Hazardous materials and stored energy registers
    • HS Codes and customs compliance
    • Shipping documentation and declarations
    • Export controls, dual-use classifications and customs requirements

Technical Review, Clarification & Approval

  • Review and approve supplier packing proposals
  • Assess suitability for transport modes, climate conditions and storage durations
  • Ensure adequate securing, corrosion protection, sealing and lifting arrangements
  • Review and approve Deviation Decision Requests (DDR)
  • Support packaging solutions for:
    • Multimodal transport (road, sea, air and rail)
    • Abnormal / out-of-gauge shipments
    • Environmental and sustainability requirements

Supplier Engagement & Inspection

  • Conduct supplier visits and shopfloor inspections
  • Witness packing activities and verify compliance prior to release
  • Review packing photographs, despatch dossiers and lifting / transport drawings
  • Reject non-compliant packing and drive corrective actions where required

Logistics & Technical Assurance

Provide technical expertise relating to:

  • Large mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Valves, pipes, fittings, cable drums and bulk materials
  • Fragile, hazardous and dual-use materials

Ensure correct application of:

  • Desiccants, corrosion inhibitors and preservation systems
  • Shock, temperature and humidity monitoring devices

Validate lifting strategies, securing points and transport cradles to ensure safety and integrity throughout transportation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with:

  • Project Logistics teams
  • Procurement teams
  • Engineering teams
  • Suppliers and inspection personnel

Support early visibility of dimensions, weights, abnormal loads and transportation constraints.

Compliance, Risk & Documentation

Ensure full compliance with:

  • Export controls and customs requirements
  • Hazardous materials regulations
  • International shipping and documentation standards

Oversee:

  • Despatch dossiers
  • Packing lists
  • Certificates of origin
  • MSDS and DGNs
  • Marking, labelling and handling symbols

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in logistics, packing and transportation within oil & gas or heavy engineering
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • International shipping and customs compliance
    • Multimodal transportation
    • Abnormal load handling
    • Preservation and corrosion protection methods
  • Experience carrying out supplier inspections and audits
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Logistics, Supply Chain or a related discipline
