Engineering Checker

Location: Bolton
Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract (6 months)
Working Pattern: 4 days per week (Monday–Thursday), 37 hours per week
Rate: £30–£55 per hour (Umbrella rate, Inside IR35) dependent on experience

Overview

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Engineering Checker to join a busy engineering team on a 6-month fixed-term contract.

This role plays a key part in ensuring the quality, accuracy and consistency of technical engineering output, ensuring compliance with business standards, customer specifications and statutory regulations. The successful candidate will support continuous improvement initiatives and help maintain high standards across engineering documentation and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Check and approve engineering outputs, including: 3D models, Engineering drawings, Bills of Materials (BOM), and technical documentation
  • Ensure technical completeness, dimensional accuracy, manufacturability and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Review tolerance stack analyses to ensure cumulative tolerances do not compromise product functionality or certification.
  • Maintain and develop standard drawing formats and ensure alignment across all engineering output.
  • Support adherence to ISO 9001 procedures and maintain accurate checking logs.
  • Contribute to the investigation and resolution of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
  • Provide constructive technical feedback to design engineers.
  • Identify recurring issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support Sales and Estimating teams with tender activities when required.
  • Promote strong working relationships across engineering and wider teams.

Key Requirements

Qualifications:

  • HNC/HND in Engineering plus 10+ years’ experience in industrial sheet or steel fabrication, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree (BEng Hons), preferably Mechanical Engineering, plus 6+ years’ experience in industrial sheet or steel fabrication

Experience & Skills:

  • Proven experience checking or authoring engineering drawings within a mechanical design environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacture (DFM).
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Engineering drawing fundamentals (projection angles, dimensioning methods, view types, etc.)
    • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Datum systems
    • Limits and fits
    • Surface roughness specifications
    • BS 8888:2017 standards
  • Strong attention to detail with a quality-focused mindset.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Flexibility to support project deadlines when required.
