Senior EC&I Engineer

Location: Bolton
Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Friday)

  • Monday–Thursday: Typically 8:00am–5:00pm (office-based)
  • Friday: 8:00am–12:00pm (home working)

Salary: £45,000 – £59,000 per annum (dependent on experience)

The Role

We are currently recruiting for a Senior EC&I Engineer to join an established engineering team based in Bolton delivering specialist automated access and safety systems across highly regulated industries.

This role involves the design, installation support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of automated door and access systems. Systems include pedestrian automatic doors, industrial door systems, and safety-critical doorsets used within nuclear, defence, transport, and other high-hazard environments.

You will act as a focal point for EC&I design activities, working closely with Mechanical Engineers, project teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively across departments to determine project scope and support the development of Functional Design Specifications
  • Conduct site visits to assess existing systems and verify modification requirements
  • Produce detailed EC&I designs including wiring schematics, panel layouts, and cable schedules
  • Generate EC&I drawings, technical documentation, and calculations
  • Use SISTEMA software to analyse and verify Performance Levels (PL) of safety-related control systems
  • Support installation teams with troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
  • Review and technically verify EC&I drawings and documentation produced by other engineers
  • Ensure compliance with electrical and machinery safety standards
  • Support NCR resolution and raise NCRs where required
  • Liaise with internal teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and innovation
  • Provide flexibility to support project deadlines where required

Essential Requirements

  • Qualification in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and Machinery Directive principles
  • Proven experience with automated doors, access systems, or similar electrical/mechanical systems
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, control circuits, and fault-finding
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
  • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software (preferably AutoCAD 2D and Inventor 3D)
  • Ability to independently design compliant EC&I systems
  • Experience producing technical drawings, reports, and specifications
  • Ability to perform hand and software-based calculations
  • Understanding of relevant electrical and safety standards
  • Good organisational skills with a strong focus on quality and compliance

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with automated systems such as roller shutters, sectional doors, or industrial sliding doors
  • ECS or CSCS card
  • Security Clearance (SC) or eligibility to obtain
  • Experience working within nuclear, defence, or other safety-critical industries
  • Experience using SISTEMA for Performance Level (PL) calculations
  • Familiarity with VFDs, safety PLCs, interlock systems, and emergency release mechanisms
  • Understanding of standards such as:
    • BS EN 16005
    • BS EN 12453
    • BS EN ISO 13849
    • BS EN 60204
