Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Bolton, office-based
Hours: Monday – Thursday, 7:00am – 5:00pm (4-day week)
Salary: Up to £39,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Job Description:
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to carry out all aspects of mechanical design, including production of 3D models, general arrangement drawings, and design-for-manufacture output (assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of materials, and as-built drawings) in line with company procedures and specifications. This role is responsible for generating accurate and compliant design outputs for purchasing, production, and operations teams.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Produce designs compliant with product assurance requirements, considering all stages of the product lifecycle (materials, manufacturability, installability, operability).
- Eliminate H&S risks in designs in accordance with CDM regulations.
- Prepare Designer’s Risk Assessments, clearly identifying mitigation measures.
- Create 3D models in Autodesk Inventor as required.
- Produce 2D drawings from 3D models for internal manufacturing and review/approval, following the Engineering Handbook and BS 8888.
- Ensure all drawings, models, and documents are accurate and concise before release.
- Collaborate with analysis engineers to ensure designs reflect theoretical analysis and log changes appropriately.
- Understand build sequences prior to release into production.
- Attend design and manufacturability reviews, driving 3D models and communicating design intent to the project team.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design capabilities and efficiency.
- Contribute to R&D activities and discuss innovative design solutions for bespoke projects.
- Maximise change capture within the department, ensuring all project changes are recorded.
- Provide support to the wider project team, liaising with stakeholders as required.
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
- Either:
- HND in Engineering plus 5 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrication, or
- BEng Hons in Mechanical Engineering plus 3 years’ experience in industrial sheet/steel fabrication.
- Proficient in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault.
- Knowledge of steel manufacturing techniques and limitations (including press brake).
- Understanding of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures/components.
- Strong focus on quality and timely output.
- Working knowledge of BS 8888 for engineering drawings.
- Ability to compile Designer’s Risk Assessments.
- Flexibility to work overtime to meet project deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Awareness of door performance testing standards and guides.
- Understanding of drive and control systems.
- Knowledge of welding types, strengths, and limitations.
- Understanding of tolerance stacking and practical application of tolerances.
- Ability to programme templates using iLogic/VB.
- SC clearance or ability to obtain it.
